Finally finished this piece. Inspired by another Elvis Costello song "Miss Macbeth".
I am "free" from working in an office and I am getting to my pile of works I need to finish that have been sitting on my desk... moved to the bookshelf... back on the desk... now being attended to.

I had a nice surprise yesterday, I went into the gallery down the road where I have some of my work, and strangely enough, after having a brief conversation about how I sell more stuff "in the flesh" than on-line with someone the other day (it seems for the moment) that the gallery sold three of my pieces. Pretty pleased, I even got paid on the spot! Yeah! Now she even wants me to give her a CV to give to the person who is very interested in my work. Fabulous.

No this isn't a cop-out... I honestly think it falls into the two categories: Illustration Friday's "Visitors" & Illustration Friday Night's "In The Club".
Should I explain?

So this is my last (yeah!) Ern Malley illustration that I needed to do to have all my illustrations done for my book... this piece is directly talking about the people involved: Max Harris (the hoaxed) and James McAudley and Harold Stewart (Ern Malley combined). This has quotes from Harris during the obscenity trial, where he said things such as:

"I haven't an opinion on that."
"I dont know what the author meant."
"I can refer you to plenty of publications with worse than that in them, if you are looking for that sort of thing."
"It all depends on who the individual is. It is not immoral to me."
"I cant help the interpretation that some people might place on it."
"Some people could place an indecent interpretation on anything."
"I would have to consider the poem as a whole before I answer that."

"If you are looking for that sort of thing, I can refer you to plenty of books and cheaper pubs that you can fill yr department with. Our publication is intended for cultured minds, who understand these things, and place ordinary thoughts on a higher level."

... just to save his arse basically, which he didn't really manage to do, but perhaps a little (quand même!).

So "in the club" relates to that last quote about people with cultured minds and "Visitors" for Ern Malley. Voila!
I guess an illustration should be more straight forward than that, but that is my "art background" coming out there, oh dear art-bullshit never really works it's way out of your system, does it?

I woke up this morning with that horrid feeling I was empty of ideas... I finished Dicken's Bleak House, I lay in bed, I picked up Don Quixotte again... then I though, ENOUGH! and created...

CAPTAIN BEAST!
Surprise we have a paper boat... la revanche du bateau en papier!
(the revenge of the paper boat).
I found that playing card in the street.

Done it!
Finally.

I think work is getting to me, I am not sleeping well, and well, that's how it is when you work for someone else who has crazy deadlines I guess. Just so tired, but not sleeping well.
See! repeating myself. Babbling. Fabulous.
