Salon Fais-Le-Toi-Même

Over the weekend I participated in the Salon Fais-Le-Toi-Meme, for L'Atelier d'éditions populaire, so we had the posters up from the Kitsch Catch Expo (as you can see in the second (bad) photo. The rest, on the table, especially for the Sunday, was all me. I met lots of good people, I think... the only thing I find interesting is, you watch people as they talk to you, they can hear your accent, and finally I mention that I am Australian, and their attitude towards you completely changes. Before you were an evil English person, and after you are one of those lovely Australians...

Bliss by Peter Carey
Saturday, August 23, 2008, 02:18 PM - General, Relationships, Music/Books/Film, Language, English
Peter Carey's hero is a happy innocent; he remembers his childhood as a Vision Splendid, indulges his wife and children, and is universally regarded as a Good Bloke. Then he dies - only for nine minutes, it's a heart attack - and wakes up in Hell. His wife is unfaithful, his partner's a rat, his son pushes drugs, his daughter sells herself, his advertising company promotes products that cause cancer.
Against these torments Carey provides a saviour: hippy Honey Barbara, pantheist, healer, whore. Honey is to Harry as Isis is to Osiris. Together they conquer Hell and retire to the forest where their children inherit the legend of paradise regained...
THE NEW STATESMAN
Peter Carey's Bliss is a book I read a long time ago, just after I left school, and recently re-read to see if my impression of it had changed. I was pleased to realise that it had. I have heard many mixed reactions towards the book despite it's award winning status. It hasn't aged, and is full of Carey's love of the Australian vernacular (sometimes I wonder if anyone else understands what he is talking about outside of Australia), and it actually made me laugh again and cry (at the end), despite knowing the story.
I have written this commentary for COlivri, join in the discussion if you wish.

On TV
Sunday, August 3, 2008, 03:51 PM - General, Relationships, Music/Books/Film, Language, French
So, last Friday, France 3 came to our flat to film a segment on my man's new project COlivri. Today it was shown on the TV, as we don't have a TV we missed it, but supposedly it will be shown tonight as well. It is on line if you want to watch it : COlivri on line. It is in French of course.
Little side note: The photos are by Céline Maes (who doesn't have a website, naughty).

song of the day: "White Caribou" Ponies in the Surf
This is what happens when you have bunyip stories in your head, you need to clean your flat (which you did ALL day, how is it possible?) and you have a new camera to play with. Self portraits! Yes, this is how I feel tonight.
We saw Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis last night (sorry, film preview in French, not sure if it would be released in English speaking countries), I was astounded that I understood nearly everything. Sadly, I have had similar experiences here. Pretty hardcore accent here in the North, and well, it was a pretty funny film.

bit of subversion
Friday, June 22, 2007, 07:23 PM - Animals, Work (The Man), Food, Vegan/Vegetarian, Damn Carnies, Language
So, today I am waiting for the colour printer to print my enormous file, and there is a Japanese Design magazine sitting there, from 2005. I see these strange looking Japanese men in their meat propaganda T-shirts and a girl with a cap on that say "killer"... I fucking hope they are joking.
As I can't read Japanese, I can't tell... but something tells me they are... I hope. So I whipped over to the other side of the room, scanned the relevant pages, just so I could share.
Yep, I am going to REALLY swear in this post instead of pretending as I normally do (because, if the truth be known, I swear like a sailor if you let me)... so I have made my own subversive versions of the above comics:
I couldn't help it I'm sorry.
Someone want to tell me if they are joking?
